Rydan is a man of intense emotion and cannot bear to be around others, or even touched by them, as they have an impact upon his mental well-being, and sometimes their own physical well-being, when he creates lightning bolts due to these strong emotions. He understands he is soon to have his bride, when his turn comes according to the Sons of Destiny Prophecy, but is horrified when he thinks he has violated his twin’s wife-to-be. He then hides away as he doesn’t want to give up his position as guardian of the Fountain as he feels it is role in life. Eventually he comes to an understanding with Rora when she explains she can detect emotions and he realizes he does not affect her in the same way as others.
Rora, and her twin Mara, have arrived on Nightfall Island and into the arms of the twins. Rora has always been voraciously protected by her twin sister but gets her to settle and butt out when it seems they are being pursued by Rydan and his twin brother. Rora knows of her power and the girls protect their secret which she eventually shares with Rydan.
This is the sixth book in the series and the collective knowledge of the background and characters is built upon and added to in Rydan’s story. First-time readers of this series may have some difficulty understanding aspects of the storyline as they may feel they have missed something or feel they are missing elements of what appears to be, at times, a lack of storyline information or something that seems illogical. However, this does not detract from Rydan and Rora’s story.
This book does need to come with a warning. Tthe author herself prefaces this before the reader begins the book. The previous book, The Cat, should be read first together with this story so the reader can grasp the whole picture or the story from two different perspectives.
Rydan and his brothers understand their destiny and wait patiently for the arrival of their destined bride to break the prophecy. Each of the brothers has their own special place on the newly developed society and Rydan is no different. Rydan does not understand his emotions and the havoc it can cause until he understands what Rora is and the impact she has upon his life. Rydan’s emotion is tempered by Rora innocence and then her strong will to be with him. The pair is very suited to each other. It is also interesting to note the development of a new society and the constraints that might be placed upon that world.
