Karen White

After playing hooky from school one day in the seventh grade to read Gone With the Wind, I knew I wanted to be a writer—or become Scarlett O'Hara. In spite of these aspirations, I grew up to pursue a degree in business and graduated cum laude with a BS in Management from Tulane University.

I have always been a voracious reader and was encouraged by my teachers to write ever since elementary school. Writing a book was always in the back of my mind, but definitely something I'd "do later when I have time."

One day in 1996 when my children were just babies, I decided it was time and started writing my first book. When I had a few chapters written, I sent it in to a writer's contest and by some miracle it won. That first book, In the Shadow of the Moon, was sold and then published in 2000. It was a double finalist in Romance Writers of America's prestigious RITA award.

I have since published eleven award-winning novels, including The Girl on Legare Street which debuted at #31 on the New York Times bestseller list. I have four more books scheduled including the next two books in the Tradd Street series (in 2011 and 2013, respectively). My next Southern women's fiction ("grit lit") novel, On Folly Beach, will be published in May 2010.

While growing up, I lived in London, England and am a graduate of the American School in London. I currently live in sunny Georgia with my husband and two children. When not writing, I spend my time reading, singing, scrapbooking, carpooling children and avoiding cooking.

On Folly Beach
Folly Beach, South Carolina, has survived despite hurricanes and war. But it's the personal battles of Folly Beach's residents that have left the most scars, and why a young widow has been beckoned there to heal her own. To most people, Folly Beach is simply the last barrier island before reaching the great Atlantic. To some, it's a sanctuary for lost souls, which is why Janie Hamilton's mother encourages her to buy the local bookstore, Folly's Finds, hoping it will distract Janie from the loss of her husband.

Janie is at first resistant. So much has already changed. But after finding love letters and an image of a beautiful bottle tree in a box of used books from Folly's Finds, she decides to take the plunge. But the seller insists on one condition: Janie must allow Lulu, the late owner's sister, to continue selling her bottle trees from the store's backyard. For the most part Janie ignores Lul, and sifts through the love letters. But the more she discovers about the letters, the more she understands Lulu.

As details of a possible murder and a mysterious disappearance during World War II are revealed, the two women discover that circumstances beyond their control, sixty years apart, have brought them together, on Folly Beach. And it is here that their war-ravaged hearts can find hope for a second chance.

May is a HUGE month for me: it marks the tenth anniversary of the publication of my first book, and it's also the month my oldest child graduates from high school. I couldn't tell you which one was harder to achieve! My book, ON FOLLY BEACH (set in the Lowcountry of South Carolina) is a story of two war widows whose lives intersect only by the book store they own sixty years apart. When a box of old books hiding cryptic love notes in the margins is discovered, the lives of the two women collide, spilling secrets of an old love affair and an unsolved disappearance, and offering a young widow hope for a second chance. Now, if only my daughter's plans were as easily explained. She is currently enrolled in two great colleges, and waitlisted at two more. Somebody needs to make a decision, and SOON. I'm not paying for 4 tuitions. Motherhood, and the life of an author, isn't for sissies!
